He holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University in composition and horn. As a conductor, he has worked with the Musica Nova Ensemble, Ossia New Music, ÆPEX Contemporary Performance, and was co-music director of the Ann Arbor Camerata for the 2018-19 season. As a horn player, he has performed with Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble Signal, and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. In addition to serving as a pianist with earspace, Daniel has held the piano position in the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra. His works have been premiered by Talea Ensemble, Mivos Quartet, Ensemble Dal Niente, oboist Andy Nogal, Bergamot Quartet, and Ensemble Paramirabo. Richard is the 2022–2023 Composer-in-Residence of the Durham Symphony Orchestra and the Co-Director of earspace. Richard’s research on works by Pierre Boulez, Chaya Czernowin, and Galina Ustvolskaya has been presented at annual meetings of the Society of Music Theory, the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, and the Muisc Theory Society of New York State. His interests focus on semiotics and perception of music with an emphasize on musical timbre. Richard is an adjunct faculty member and doctoral candidate at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, from which he also holds degrees in composition (M.M.) and theory pedagogy (M.M.). She is a member of the Bergamot Quartet, the inaugural Graduate String Quartet in Residence at the Mannes School of Music. She is a versatile performer of jazz and folk music as well as her primary focus of contemporary classical music. While Andy has performed widely across the United States and Europe in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings, and has premiered nearly 100 new works to date, he is most proud of the collaborations he’s often enjoyed with emerging students, composers, and performers in public schools, universities, religious centers, and community centers. She is the pianist of Khemia Ensemble and the founder and Executive Director of A Seat at the Piano (ASAP). ASAP is a non-profit resource that is dedicated to the promotion of inclusion in the performance and study of solo piano repertoire. During the summers, she is the Assistant Director of Piano of the Brancaleoni International Music Festival in Piobbico, Italy. She can frequently be found in the symphony hall performing with various professional orchestras in the area including the North Carolina Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, while also holding principal positions with the Fayetteville, Durham, and Raleigh Symphonies. Outside of the classical arena she is a founding member of the contemporary performing ensemble, earspace, and plays drums with the Durham Flash Chorus and the all female rock band Kinda Nice. He is the solo oboist with two Chicago groups that specialize in performing new music: Ensemble Dal Niente and the Grossman Ensemble. In 2011, Nogal was awarded the gold medal in the senior wind division of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. One year later, he became the first and, to date, only oboist ever to receive the Kranichstein Music Prize at the famous Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music. Nogal regularly performs with the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic, and other orchestras across the Midwest. He has also appeared at Walt Disney Concert Hall, NY Phil Biennial, Philadelphia Orchestra BarnesStokowski Festival, Beijing Modern Festival, Ojai Festival, June in Buffalo, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and the Sydney Conservatorium. A proud alumnus of the public school band programs in his hometown, Lemont, Illinois, he is also a member of the Chicago Wind Symphony and the Wheaton Municipal Band. For three summers, Nogal studied and performed under the direction of Pierre Boulez at the Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland. His degrees in music performance and art history come from Northwestern University. He has served as Assistant Conductor with the North Carolina Opera and Cover Conductor with the North Carolina Symphony. During this last season, Povázsay conducted the N.C. premiere of a newly staged production of As One, a chamber opera by Laura Kaminsky. An avid interpreter of contemporary music, Povázsay’s work with earspace aims to explore the inherent potentials within every moment and space, bringing the audience closer to the music they experience. Her work spans the realms of classical, contemporary, pop, rock, electroacoustic, and folk, and she would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Erin is known for her ability to perform with any ensemble of rock, folk, pop, bluegrass, and whatever-you-can-think-of in between. She performs with rock band Pompeii Graffiti and is half of the indie folk duo Black Rhinoceros. Lena holds a Bachelor of Music in violin performance from Northwestern University. Her education also included studies at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris and Université de Paris 8 – Vincennes-St Denis. Lena received her master’s degree in contemporary violin performance at the Manhattan School of Music.
